The Spanish Mustang
The Spanish Mustang is a unique breed, relatively small in numbers when compared to "modern" breeds but a breed that proudly carries the inheritance of its illustrious ancestors from Spain. Brought to the New World by the Spanish Conquistadors, the Spanish Mustang is descended from the Andalusian, North African Barb, Jennet and the native Spanish Sorraia horse. Upon the backs of these horses the Spaniards explored the New World long before the English ventured forth from the eastern coast of the United States.
In the 1920's remnants from wild herds and from the Cheyenne, Crow, Shoshone and Ute Indian herds as well as from Old Mexico and a few private breeders were gathered by Robert and Ferdinand Brislawn. To insure preservation of these few remaining representatives of a race that had once roamed the plains and mountains by the thousands.

The Spanish Mustang Registry Inc. was incorparated in 1957 with the sole purpose of perpetuating a vanishing breed for posterity. Once gone forever gone!
The Spanish Mustang Registry, Inc. was the first registry of its kind and with a current registration of approximately 3000 horses, the primary objective of preservation and perpetuation has been attained. The current focus is now promotion for this rare, distinctive and unique breed, a breed that can do it all! Known for their legendary toughness and endurance, today's Spanish Mustangs are competative in these fields and have received national acclaim for their achievements. Well suited for long distance riding of 100 miles per day and multi-day rides of 250 miles overall, the Spanish Mustang is demonstrating the inheritance of his Spanish ancestors.

Spanish Mustangs range in size from 13.2 to 15.2 hands with weight proportionate to their height. Smoothly built with deep heart girth and outstanding legs and feet, they are the ultimate using animal, beautiful and classical but also sturdy and strong, unusual combinations in this modern world. Smooth gaits contribute to riding comfort with some individuals exhibiting paso gaits inherited from their Spanish progenitors.

Exotic colors and patterns abound in the Spanish Mustang including the rare Medicine Hat and War Bonnet, appaloosa, dun and grulla. Dispositions are even with exceptional learning capacity.

Through the efforts of the Spanish Mustang Registry, Inc. and the dedication of its members and breeders, a breed that was precariously balanced on the brink of extinction is now available to all interested persons.
Membership in the Spanish Mustang Registry is open to all. Ownership of a Spanish Mustang is not required for membership.
